VAT Returns for Small Businesses in Surrey
If your business is VAT registered, you usually need to send HMRC a VAT return every three months and pay any VAT due by the same deadline. No Hassle Accounts prepares and submits your VAT returns for you, working from your business records.
We prepare VAT returns for sole traders, partnerships and limited companies across Surrey, from our base in Walton-on-Thames. That includes construction businesses using the VAT domestic reverse charge.
Your VAT return is only as accurate as the records behind it. If we also do your bookkeeping, your VAT figures come straight from books that are already reconciled.
What our VAT returns service typically includes
- Checking your sales and purchase records for the VAT period
- Preparing the VAT return from your records
- Querying anything that looks wrong or is missing before we submit
- Submitting the return to HMRC using Making Tax Digital compatible software
- Telling you how much VAT to pay, or whether you are due a repayment, and by when
Who our VAT service suits
- Businesses that have recently registered for VAT
- VAT-registered sole traders, partnerships and limited companies who want their returns handled each quarter
- Businesses that keep their own books but want someone to check and submit the return
- Construction businesses that need to apply the domestic reverse charge correctly
What we need from you
For each VAT period, please send or give us access to:
- Your sales invoices, including any credit notes
- Purchase invoices and receipts, especially VAT invoices for anything you want to reclaim
- Bank statements for the period
- Details of any cash sales or cash purchases
- Any reverse charge invoices, if you work in construction
When you first come to us, we will also need your VAT registration number and details of any VAT scheme you use. Our article on what VAT-registered businesses need to keep track of explains the records in more detail.
Making Tax Digital for VAT
All VAT-registered businesses must keep digital VAT records and submit their returns using compatible software, unless HMRC has agreed an exemption. This is called Making Tax Digital for VAT. If you use spreadsheets, the figures must still reach HMRC through a digital link, not by copying and pasting.
We can submit your return through compatible software. If your records are not yet digital, tell us how you keep them now and we will explain the options.
VAT and construction: the domestic reverse charge
Many building and construction services between VAT-registered businesses in the Construction Industry Scheme are covered by the VAT domestic reverse charge. The supplier does not charge VAT on the invoice. The customer accounts for it on their own VAT return instead. Our CIS and construction accounting page explains more.
Frequently asked questions
When is my VAT return due?
The deadline is usually one calendar month and 7 days after the end of your VAT period. Payment is due by the same date. GOV.UK explains how to submit a VAT return.
Do I need to register for VAT?
You must register if your taxable turnover goes over the VAT threshold. You can also choose to register below it. GOV.UK explains when to register for VAT. Get in touch if you think you are close to the threshold.
Can you correct a mistake on an earlier VAT return?
Tell us what has happened when you get in touch. HMRC has set rules for correcting errors, and the right approach depends on the size of the error.
Do you work with construction businesses?
Yes. We work with construction businesses, including those using CIS and the domestic reverse charge. See our CIS and construction accounting page.
